Hyundai Tucson in Ireland 2026: Motor Tax, Real Running Costs and What Yours Is Worth
The Hyundai Tucson was Ireland's number one car from 2022 to 2025. Here is what it actually costs to run here - motor tax by drivetrain, real-world fuel economy against the brochure figure, a five-year ownership projection, the March 2026 steering-knuckle recall you must check before buying used, and the model-specific NCT traps.

For four straight years - 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 - the Hyundai Tucson was the single best-selling new car in Ireland. That is not a small achievement in a market with as much choice as ours. In 2026 it has slipped to second place year-to-date behind the Toyota Yaris Cross, but the Tucson remains the default family SUV on Irish driveways, and that makes it one of the most traded cars in the country.
Which raises the two questions that actually matter: what does it cost to run here, and what is yours worth when you sell it? This guide answers both with Irish figures - motor tax bands, WLTP emissions, real-world fuel use, and the recall you need to check before money changes hands.
Why the Tucson took over Irish driveways
The fourth-generation Tucson (codename NX4) launched in 2021 with the "Parametric Hidden Lights" grille - daytime running lights that vanish into the geometry when switched off. Love it or hate it, you can identify one at a hundred metres in the dark, and distinctiveness sells.
Underneath the styling, the reasons are more practical:
- 620 litres of boot space with the rear seats up - class-leading for a mid-size family SUV.
- Five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, plus an eight-year / 160,000km warranty on the hybrid traction battery. Irish buyers weight warranty heavily.
- A six-speed automatic instead of a CVT. Most full hybrids use a CVT; the Tucson does not. It is the main reason owners say it does not feel like a hybrid.
- The right size for Irish use - it fits apartment-block parking in Dublin and Cork, and swallows child seats without argument.
It also took a five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2021, with an 87% child-occupant score - the highest individual result of its test.
Motor tax: the number most buyers get wrong
Ireland taxes cars registered from 1 January 2021 on WLTP CO2. Here is where each Tucson drivetrain lands:
The 1.6 T-GDi mild hybrid (150hp) sits alongside the plain petrol at roughly 158 g/km and the same EUR 280 band.
Budget 2026 left motor tax rates essentially unchanged, and the proposed weight-based tax for SUVs did not make it into the final budget - the emissions-based system stays. You can check any registration directly at motortax.ie, or read the policy background on gov.ie.
The catch on older Tucsons: a 2015-2020 car is taxed on NEDC CO2, and anything registered before July 2008 is taxed on engine capacity. A 2.0-litre diesel Mk3 on the engine-cc system is a very different annual bill to a 2022 Hybrid. Always check the actual registration, not the model year.
Real running costs - not the brochure figures
Hyundai quotes 5.8 litres/100km for the 239hp Hybrid. Irish owners report 6.5 to 8.0 litres/100km in mixed driving, and CompleteCar.ie recorded 8.9 on a hard test route.
The reason is worth understanding before you buy. The Tucson's electric motor does most of its work below 100km/h. Above roughly 120km/h the petrol engine is doing effectively all the work. If your week is mostly motorway, the Hybrid's advantage over the plain petrol narrows sharply. If it is school runs, town driving and mixed suburban routes, the Hybrid is exactly the right call.

Five-year cost of ownership
Insurance sits in group 18-25 depending on trim and drivetrain - mid-table for a family SUV, and far more affected by your own driver profile than by the badge. Get quotes on the exact spec before you commit.
Note that the PHEV only matches the Hybrid if you charge it every day. Skip a fortnight of charging and you are hauling 130kg of battery around for nothing, and the maths flips against you.
The March 2026 recall - check this before you pay
In March 2026 Hyundai issued a recall covering some 2025 and 2026 build Tucsons for a manufacturing fault on the front steering knuckles.
If you are buying a 2025 or 2026 used Tucson, this is the single most important piece of pre-purchase homework:
- Get the VIN from the seller.
- Check its recall status yourself at hyundai.ie - do not take the seller's word for it.
- Ask for the dealer receipt or stamp confirming the work was completed.
Recalls are normal and Hyundai handled this one properly. An unrepaired car is not.
What the NCT catches on a Tucson
- Headlight aim. The Parametric LED units need a proper beam-setter; garages without one get it wrong.
- Uneven front tyre wear on the heavier Hybrid - high front-axle torque. Rotate at every service.
- The 12V auxiliary battery typically weakens around year four and throws a cascade of alarming dashboard warnings that a EUR 120-180 replacement clears.
- Engine warning light equals automatic fail since NCT Phase 2 in May 2023. Run an OBD scan before you book.

Hybrid, PHEV or petrol? The honest answer
Buy the Hybrid in Executive Plus trim if you want the straightforward answer. It is the sweet spot on equipment, real-world economy and resale - the HEV retains roughly 67% of its value at three years and 52% at five, the strongest of the range, because the Irish used market actively wants hybrids.
Buy the PHEV only if you have a home charger and will use it religiously. It also makes a strong benefit-in-kind case as a company car. Without daily charging it depreciates faster (~60% retention at three years) for no running-cost benefit.
Skip the entry-level petrol. The purchase saving does not survive three years of fuel and tax.

The verdict
The Tucson is Ireland's default family SUV because it makes very few mistakes. The steering is numb and everyone has one - those are the real criticisms. Against that: the biggest boot in the class, the best warranty terms on the Irish market, genuinely strong real-world economy in mixed driving, and a used market that wants them.
Buy the Hybrid, service it at a Hyundai dealer to keep the warranty extension alive, check the recall, and you will not think about it again for five years.
